郢书燕说的典故

古时候，有个人从楚国的郢都写信给燕国的相国。这封信是在晚上写的。写信的时候，烛光不太亮，此人就对在一旁端蜡烛的仆人说：“举烛。”（把蜡烛举高一点）可是，因为他在专心致志地写信，嘴里说着举烛，也随手把“举烛”两个字写到信里去了。

燕相收到信以后，看到信中“举烛”二字，琢磨了半天，自作聪明地说，这“举烛”二字太好了。举烛，就是倡行光明清正的政策；要倡行光明，就要举荐人才担任重任。燕相把这封信和自己的理解告诉了燕王，燕王也很高兴，并按燕相对“举烛”的理解，选拔贤能之才，治理国家。燕国治理得还真不错。

郢人误书，燕相误解。国家是治理好了，但根本不是郢人写信的意思。这真是一个穿凿附会的典型例子。根据这个故事，后人引申出“郢书燕说”这句成语，比喻穿凿附会，曲解原意。
