刘备投奔荆州刘表，刘表派刘备驻守新野。在新野，刘备诸葛亮巧用火攻，打败了不可一世的曹将夏侯惇。刘备担心曹操会来报复，诸葛亮说：“新野是个小县，不能久居，最近听说刘表病在旦夕，可乘此机会，夺取荆州作为安身之地，也许可以抵抗曹操。”刘备说：“你说得很好，但是我受刘表的恩，怎能忍心呢？”诸葛亮说：“你今天不取，过后一定会后悔的！”刘备说：“我宁可死，也不忍心作忘恩负义的事情。”
