基本解释据《淮南子·人间训》载，边塞老翁失马，人以为祸，结果其马领胡人骏马同归，人皆贺之，而其子却因骑马摔伤致残，乡人吊之，不料胡人入塞，边塞丁壮战死者十九，其子却因腿跛而全。后因以“马去马归”喻世事多变，得失无常。

马去马归的典故
古代塞北的一老汉家的马跑到长城外面胡人那边去了，乡亲们安慰他，他说这不一定是坏事，几天后走失的马带回几匹烈马回来。老翁认为这不一定是好事，他的儿子因骑胡马摔断了腿，老翁认为不是坏事，后老汉儿子因腿伤而躲过战祸。
