基本解释泛指经过多人传播的流言。语本《战国策 秦策二》：“昔者曾子处费，费人有与曾子同名族者而杀人，人告曾子母曰：‘曾参杀人。’曾子母曰：‘吾子不杀人。’织自若。有顷焉，人又曰：‘曾参杀人。’其母尚织自若。顷之，一人又告之曰：‘曾参杀人。’其母惧，投杼逾墙而走。

春秋时期，费地有一个与曾参同名的人在外杀了人，有好事者跑到曾参的母亲那里说：“曾参杀了人。”曾母回答说：“我儿不会杀人。”照常织布。没多久又有两人跑来误传曾参杀了人，这时曾母害怕，就投杼逾墙而走。
