春秋时期，晋献公向虞国借道去打虢国，虞国大夫宫之奇劝虞公不要借道，虞公不听，虢国的都城下阳被攻占。三年后晋侯又向虞国借道，宫之奇劝虞王道：“虢，虞之表也。虢亡虞必从之。晋不可启，寇不可玩。一之谓甚，其可再乎？”虞王不听被消灭。
