薛蟠从老家来到大观园住下后，打听到贾府有一所家学，学校里有许多年轻人，就动了龙阳之兴，假装去上学，不过是三日打鱼，两日晒网而已。学校里有些学生图薛蟠的钱财就被上了他的贼船。秦钟与贾宝玉来上学，薛蟠立刻就打他们的主意。
