贾琏听从尤三姐的意见，外出公干时遇到薛蟠与柳湘莲。贾琏极力向柳湘莲推荐尤三姐，薛蟠也主张亲上加亲，柳湘莲同意这门亲事并拿出定情礼物托贾琏带回。几个月后柳湘莲听说尤三姐与姐夫有染要退亲，尤三姐当场自寻短见死了，柳湘莲也出家为僧。
