百尺竿头的典故

宋朝时，长沙有位高僧名叫景岑，号招贤大师。这位太师佛学造诣高深，时常到各地去传道讲经。一天，招贤大师应邀到一座佛寺的法堂上讲经。前来听讲的僧人很多，大师讲得深入浅出，娓娓动听，听的人深受感染。法堂内除了大师的声音外，一片寂静。招贤大师讲经完毕后，一名僧人站立起来，问他行了一个礼，然后提了几个问题，请求大师解答。大师还了礼，慢慢地作答起来。 那僧人听到不懂处，又向大师提问，于是两人一问一答，气氛亲切自然。 听讲的人发现，他俩谈论的是有关佛教的最高境界----十方世界的内容。

为了说明十方世界究竟是怎么回事，招贤大师当场出示了一份偈（ji）帖。所谓偈帖，就是佛教中记载唱词的本子。但见大师指着上面的一段文字念唱道：“百丈的竹罕并不算高，尚需更进一步，十方世界才算是真正的高峰。”
