译文
封侯的意念早已丝毫不存，悠悠然远离了尘世的嚣纷。
种着瓜又不废读书之乐，这样的生活贵比千金。
远远望去，江南的原野湖沼多过土地，春天的山峰半掩着浮云。
我这一生已渐渐老去，要说隐居的高致，那是远远比不上您这位高人。
注释
薛氏：指薛师石，字景石，永嘉人，隐居在会昌湖西，名其居室为“瓜庐”，因号瓜庐翁。
“不作”句：《史记·萧相国世家》载：汉初有个人叫召平，秦朝时曾做过东陵侯，秦亡不仕，种瓜于长安青门外，世称青门瓜。诗人在这里赞扬薛氏“不作封侯念”，暗用了这个典故。
远世纷：远离尘世的纷争。
学圃：学习种蔬菜。君：指薛师石。

薛氏瓜庐创作背景
薛师石与“永嘉四灵”过从甚密，常以诗相唱和。他隐居不仕，尝筑室于会昌湖西，并名其室为“瓜庐”。诗人倾慕他耕读自乐，甘于淡泊的隐士风范，所以写下这首五律赞赏他。

薛氏瓜庐鉴赏
首联“不作封侯念，悠然远世纷”，写出薛师石不求利禄，超乎世俗的情怀。“悠然”，超远之貌，在这里似乎兼有“心远”与“地偏”两重意思在内。结庐之境远隔嚣尘，这是“地偏”；胸襟之中不慕功名，这是“心远”，索居于会昌湖西的薛师石是做到了这两点的。
颔联“惟应种瓜事，犹被读书分”，是写这位隐士所从事的事情。看了这一联，会使读者想起陶渊明《读山海经》中的两句：“既耕且已种，时还读我书”。隐逸之士，其劳动并非为了糊口，其读书并非为了功名，而都不过是精神寄托而已。试想，耕种累了就读读书，“半耕半读”，这是一种多么充实、自在而又富于情趣的生活。不过诗人这两句与陶渊明的诗句情旨虽同，在句法上却有一点区别。陶渊明的诗句字面本身就透出一种从容、闲适之意。诗人的两句是说：每曰只顾忙着应付种瓜的事还不算，而且要抽出一半儿时间来读书。这“惟应……犹被……”的句式，透着忙上加忙的意思。其实，这里是通过“忙”来写闲的。诗人这里通过种瓜、读书的“忙”，来把薛师石超然遗世的闲适之情巧妙地映带出来了。
颈联“野水多于地，春山半是云”化用姚合《送宋慎言》：“驿路多连水，州城半在云”两句，写的是薛氏瓜庐四周的景色，前一句写湖沼的景象非常贴切，后一句写远处的云山也很传神，为读者展现出一幅生动的画图。这是一种洋溢着“野趣”的、不带人工痕迹的自然美景，与隐士的情怀是那样的合拍。可以说，此外境本身就是隐士心境的反照。
尾联“吾生嫌已老，学圃未如君”，直接抒发诗人对于薛氏瓜庐的感触。““圃”本指种蔬菜，这里指薛师石以种瓜隐居而言。这一联惋惜的慨叹，在诗中起的是“卒章显志”的作用，从而把诗人自己对隐居生活的羡慕与向往正面传达出来。
全诗用典贴切，章法布置有序，读来颇为流畅。
