译文
登高远眺，千里美景尽收眼底。大自然的湖光山色，要数这里最美。你这一去，何时才能返回？请痛饮几杯吧，但愿醉倒再不离去。
看，沙塘里华灯初放。听，是谁把动人心弦的《水调》来弹唱?当夜深风静我们扶醉欲归时，只见在一轮明月的映照下，钱塘江水澄澈得象一面绿色的玻璃一样。
注释
湖山信：元祐初，学士梅挚任杭州太守，宋仁宗曾作诗送行曰：“地有湖山美，东南第一州。”此句即从仁宗诗来。梅挚到任后筑有美堂于吴山。神宗熙宁七年（1074）秋，杭州太守陈襄（述句），将调往雨京（今河南商丘）行前宴客于美堂。席间苏轼作此词。
使君：对州郡长官的称呼，此处指陈襄。汉时称刺史为使君，汉以后用以尊称州郡长官。
沙河塘：位于杭州东南，当时是商业中心。
水调：商调名，隋炀帝开汴渠，曾作《水调》。
阑：残，尽，晚。

虞美人·有美堂赠述古创作背景
此词作于熙宁七年（1074）七月苏轼任杭州通判时。时杭州太守陈襄（字述古）调任，即将离杭，设宴于杭州城中吴山上之有美堂。应陈襄之请，苏轼即席写下了此词。

关于此词的写作，宋人傅榦的《注坡词》所叙甚详。傅云：“《本事集》云：陈述古守杭，已及瓜代，未交前数日，宴僚佐于有美堂。侵夜月色如练，前望浙江，后顾西湖，沙河塘正出其下，陈公慨然，请贰车苏子瞻赋之，即席而就。
上片前两句极写有美堂的形胜，也即湖山满眼、一望千里的壮观。此二句从远处着想，大处落墨，境界阔大，气派不凡。
“使君能得几回来？便使樽前醉倒更徘徊”，这两句反映了词人此时此刻的心情：使君此去，何时方能重来？何时方能置酒高会？他的惜别深情是由于他们志同道合。据《宋史·陈襄传》，陈襄因批评王安石和“论青苗法不便”，被贬出知陈州、杭州。然而他不以迁谪为意，“平居存心以讲求民间利病为急”。而苏轼亦因同样的原因离开朝廷到杭州，他自言“政虽无术，心则在民”。他们共事的两年多过程中，能协调一致，组织治蝗，赈济饥民，浚治钱塘六井，奖掖文学后进。他们在力所能及的范围内，确实做了不少有益于人民的事。此时即将天隔南北，心情岂能平静？
过片描写华灯初上时杭州的繁华景象，由江上传来的流行曲调而想到杜牧的扬州，并把它与杭州景物联系起来。想当年，隋炀帝于开汴河时令制此曲，制者取材于河工之劳歌，因而声韵悲切。传至唐代，唐玄宗听后伤时悼往，凄然泣下。而杜牧他的著名的《扬州》诗中写道：“谁家唱水调，明月满扬州。”直到宋代，此曲仍风行民间。这种悲歌，此时更增添离怀别思。离思是一种抽象的思绪，能感觉到，却看不见，摸不着，对它本身作具体描摹很困难。词人借助灯火和悲歌，既写出环境，又写出心境，极见功力之深。
结尾两句，词人借“碧琉璃”喻指江水的碧绿清澈，生动形象地形容了有美堂前水月交辉、碧光如镜的夜景。走笔至此，词人的感情同满江明月、万顷碧光凝成一片，仿佛暂时忘掉了适才的宴饮和世间的纷扰，而进入到人与自然融为一体的美妙境界。这里，明澈如镜、温婉静谧的江月，象征友人为人高洁耿介，也象征他们友情的纯洁深挚。写有美堂上所观夜景。
此词以美的意象，给人以极高的艺术享受。词中美好蕴藉的意象，是作者的感情与外界景物发生交流而形成的，是词人自我情感的象征。那千里湖山，那一江明月，是作者心灵深处缕缕情思的闪现。

苏轼（1037－1101），北宋文学家、书画家、美食家。字子瞻，号东坡居士。汉族，四川人，葬于颍昌（今河南省平顶山市郏县）。一生仕途坎坷，学识渊博，天资极高，诗文书画皆精。其文汪洋恣肆，明白畅达，与欧阳修并称欧苏，为“唐宋八大家”之一；诗清新豪健，善用夸张、比喻，艺术表现独具风格，与黄庭坚并称苏黄；词开豪放一派，对后世有巨大影响，与辛弃疾并称苏辛；书法擅长行书、楷书，能自创新意，用笔丰腴跌宕，有天真烂漫之趣，与黄庭坚、米芾、蔡襄并称宋四家；画学文同，论画主张神似，提倡“士人画”。著有《苏东坡全集》和《东坡乐府》等。
