译文
道路留香不吝惜美女的脚步，久久敛束着丝罗袜如在水波上走。只见她那舞步如旋风，都不留下步履踪迹。
暗暗地穿着宫廷样式的鞋适合走路稳健，而并立两脚行路就困难。你说纤细美妙到何种程度，该是很难。要说“纤妙”，必须把妇女托在手掌上去看她的脚。
注释
菩萨蛮：词牌名。
咏足：咏妇女的小脚。
涂：道路，通途。
莲承步：《南史·齐纪下·废帝东昏侯》：又凿金为莲华以帖地，令潘妃行其上，曰：此步步生莲华也。后世称妇女之小脚为“三寸金莲”。
罗袜：丝罗制的袜。
凌波：起伏飘浮于波涛之上。
风：旋风。
行处踪：行经场所的踪迹。
偷：暗暗地。
宫样：宫廷样式的衣裳，这里借指小鞋。
双趺（fū）：脚。
纤妙：纤细美妙。
应：该。

菩萨蛮·咏足创作背景
中国古代妇女缠足始于南唐而盛行于宋代，人们认为妇女的脚缠得越小越美。自上而下，渐成风气。宋英宗熙宁六年（1073年）春，苏轼在太常博士直史馆杭州通守任上，作该词披露北宋社会这一陋习。

菩萨蛮·咏足鉴赏
上片描绘侍妓或歌妓的小脚步态。“审美理想渗透于审美感受之中，主宰着一定民族、一定时代、一定阶级的审美趣味、风尚和趋向。。”苏轼写作该词所带的审美倾向也不例外。“涂香莫惜莲承步，长愁罗袜凌波去”，特写侍妓或歌妓轻飘的步姿。莲上“承步”，“罗袜凌波”，如洛水女神飘在水面上。中国古代爱恋民歌就是承袭这种小脚美的审美观来吟咏“莲承步”，“罗袜凌波”的。“只见舞回风，都无行处踪”，特写轻飘的舞姿。正因为脚小舞起来就显得轻盈多了。飞舞起来如“回风”一般，且不留下脚印。对于这种迅疾轻盈的舞姿，苏轼是带着赞美的态度来评判的。
下片描叙侍妓或歌妓的小脚的痛苦与慰藉。“偷穿宫样稳，并立双趺困”，描写侍妓或歌妓缠足所带来的痛苦。即是暗暗地想换穿宫廷贵夫人鞋，合适是合适，但不能并立站起来，走路更困难。宋代这种残忍的缠足审美观，使很多妇女痛苦一生，苏轼毫不回避地披露了这种痛苦与困难。“纤妙说应难，须从掌上看”，纤妙是指人们以习惯的审美观为准绳，脚是缠得越小越“纤妙”。“说应难”，意思是用语言难以表达。“须从掌上看”，反映了苏轼虽然反对妇女缠足，但是存在着时代的局限性与审美上的局限性。
该词是苏轼站在欣赏的角度和批判的立场上，通过写侍妓、歌妓，披露缠足给妇女带来痛苦，对北宋社会这一陋习表示不满。该词有些庸俗，近乎游戏文字，不完全是“恶谑、恶趣”之词。

苏轼（1037－1101），北宋文学家、书画家、美食家。字子瞻，号东坡居士。汉族，四川人，葬于颍昌（今河南省平顶山市郏县）。一生仕途坎坷，学识渊博，天资极高，诗文书画皆精。其文汪洋恣肆，明白畅达，与欧阳修并称欧苏，为“唐宋八大家”之一；诗清新豪健，善用夸张、比喻，艺术表现独具风格，与黄庭坚并称苏黄；词开豪放一派，对后世有巨大影响，与辛弃疾并称苏辛；书法擅长行书、楷书，能自创新意，用笔丰腴跌宕，有天真烂漫之趣，与黄庭坚、米芾、蔡襄并称宋四家；画学文同，论画主张神似，提倡“士人画”。著有《苏东坡全集》和《东坡乐府》等。
