野径温暖铺着柔厚的碧草，山气晴净杂花更显得茂繁。
一川清水曲曲折折无声流淌，数户村居高高低低依山而筑。
午间静憩传来几声鸡鸣，访寻幽境又遇犬吠暮烟。
出游归来向人谈起此事，以为所经本是武陵桃源。
注释
即事：以当前事物为题材写诗。
径：小路。积：积聚，堆积，形容草丛茂盛。
憩：休息。鸡：一作“鸠”。
荒寻：犹言寻幽。昏：黄昏。
武陵源：即陶渊明《桃花源记》中描写的一处世外桃源，中有“鸡犬相闻”之语。武陵，郡名，郡治在今湖南常德。

即事创作背景
王安石晚年离开政坛以后，退居江宁，过着平淡的生活，心情也平静了许多，此时期所作的诗歌多为淡泊的短章，富有韵味。这首诗也是他晚年之作。

这首诗描写山村午景，从日暖花繁的景象来看，正是春末或夏初时分，脚下的小路似乎也感到了节候的温暖，路上绿草如茵，满山的野花在阳光下更显得繁茂艳丽。首联由小径写到山色，徐徐展开，像是电影中由近到远地拉开了镜头，有一种身临其景，历历在目的印象。
颔联以“纵横”、“高下”为对，工稳恰切，而且经纬交错，构成了一幅谐和匀称的画面：一道河水曲折流过，村中高高低低地散布着几户人家。自由宁静的气氛于言外可见。而“纵”与“横”、“高”与“下”，本身又各自对应，可见诗人烹字炼句的功夫；又以“一”与“数”相对，运用了数字的概念，遂令画面更加清晰可辨。
颈联进一步表现了诗人炼句的技巧。《复斋漫录》卷上说，‘静憩鸡鸣午”是吸取唐人诗句“枫林社日鼓，茅屋午时鸡”的意思而来，其实未必可信，但指出了二者都是描绘午时鸡鸣的情景却是对的。鸡在正午休息的时候长鸣，可见其地的宁静安谧，而村民的悠闲恬适也从中可以想见。“荒寻犬吠嚣”一句说狗在荒野里东寻西找，看到了昏暗的阴处就叫个不停，寥寥五字就将生活中这个不为人注意的细节传神地表现出来，而且由此可以推知山村远离尘嚣，难得有生人过访。这两句造语极为洗炼，通过特殊的语言结构，将丰富的内容，熔铸在这极简净的十个字中。胡仔《苕溪渔隐丛话》说：“卢纶《山中绝句》云：‘阳坡软草厚如织，因与鹿成相伴眠。’介甫只用五字，道尽此两句。如云‘眠分黄犊草’，岂不妙乎！”胡仔在此赞叹王安石的，正是他这种能“以少许胜多许”的语言表现能力，“荒寻犬吠昏”也是一例
这首诗前六句所描绘的景物，直是一幅形象的桃源图。《桃花源记》中“芳草鲜美，落英缤纷”的描写，正与“草如积”、“花更繁”的景色相似；“土地平旷，屋舍俨然，有良田美池桑竹之属，阡陌交通，鸡犬相闻”，又与此诗中间二联的意境一致。从这里可似看出诗人的匠心，虽然诗名《即事》，但决不是信笔写来的随意之作，他在景物的摄取，题材的剪裁上早已有成竹在胸，虽以平易语言写来，却可见到遣字造句、构思谋篇的精心安排。这种千锤百炼而以平淡出之的手法，正是诗家化境。韩愈称赞贾岛的诗说：“奸穷怪变得，往往造平淡。”（《送无本师归范阳》）苏东坡提倡“绚烂之极，归于平淡”，都是指的这种特点。王安石《题张司业诗》中说，张籍的诗“看似寻常最寄崛，成如容易却艰辛”，实际上也道出了他自己作诗的甘苦。这首《即事》就是一个很好的范例。
尾联写自己的感受：诗人远足归来，向人谈起这番游历，就像亲身去了一次世外桃源。其中虽不言景，而景自在其中。同时，也可体会到诗人对桃源生活的向往。王安石另有《桃源行》一首，直接表达了他对陶洲明笔下的桃花源的赞美，与此诗所表现的感情正可相发明。
这首诗语言简洁自然，清新流畅，注重全诗气势连贯，张弛有道，平缓有度，进退有法，作者似乎在不经意地吟咏，细处看却是淡静有味，从构图谋篇到遣词造句都颇具匠心，每一联都从不同的视角展示景物。

王安石（1021年12月18日－1086年5月21日），字介甫，号半山，谥文，封荆国公。世人又称王荆公。汉族，北宋抚州临川人（今江西省抚州市临川区邓家巷人），中国北宋著名政治家、思想家、文学家、改革家，唐宋八大家之一。欧阳修称赞王安石：“翰林风月三千首，吏部文章二百年。老去自怜心尚在，后来谁与子争先。”传世文集有《王临川集》、《临川集拾遗》等。其诗文各体兼擅，词虽不多，但亦擅长，且有名作《桂枝香》等。而王荆公最得世人哄传之诗句莫过于《泊船瓜洲》中的“春风又绿江南岸，明月何时照我还。”
