陈万年乃朝中重臣也，尝病，召子咸教戒于床下。语至三更，咸睡，头触屏风。万年大怒，欲杖之，曰：“乃公戒汝，汝反睡，不听吾言，何也？”咸叩头谢曰：“具晓所言，大要教咸谄也。”万年乃不复言。

译文
陈万年是朝中显赫的大官，有一次陈万年病了，把儿子陈咸叫来跪在床边训话。一直说到半夜，陈咸打了瞌睡，头碰到了屏风。陈万年很生气，想要拿棍子打他，说：“我作为父亲教育你，你反而打瞌睡，不听我的话，这是什么道理？”陈咸赶忙跪下叩头认错，说：“我完全明白您所说的话，主要的意思是教我要对上司要奉承拍马屁罢了！”陈万年没有再说话。

戒：同“诫”，告诫；教训。
语：谈论，说话。
睡：打瞌睡。
欲：想要。
杖：名词用作动词，用棍子打。
之：代词，指代陈咸。
曰：说。
乃公：你的父亲 ，乃：你
谢：道歉，认错。
具晓：完全明白，具，都。
大要：主要的意思。
大要教咸谄：主要的意思是教我奉承拍马。谄（chǎn），谄媚，奉承。拍马屁。
乃：是
复：再。
言：话。
显：显赫。
陈万年教子鉴赏
1.父母是孩子的第一任老师,父母的一言一行都会在孩子身上印下深深的烙印,所以说,作为父母千万要做一个合格“产品”.但是也有教孩子走歪道的父母,文中陈万年就是其中一个。“子不教，父之过。”父亲如果不给生养子女良好的教育，这就是做父亲的过错。陈万年喜好结交权势，对他们卑躬屈膝，文中内容对他极具讽刺之意。
2.不要光阿谀奉承与听信谗言。
3.父母不要为儿女做坏的榜样。
4.世上竟然有父亲教儿子拍马屁学奉承的，陈万年就是这种反面的角色。
5.儿子揭露了陈万年内心的虚伪。
