晋献公之丧，秦穆公使人吊公子重耳，且曰：“寡人闻之，亡国恒于斯，得国恒于斯。虽吾子俨然在忧服之中，丧亦不可久也，时亦不可失也，孺子其图之！”
以告舅犯。舅犯曰：“孺子其辞焉。丧人无宝，仁亲以为宝。父死之谓何？又因以为利，而天下其孰能说之？孺子其辞焉！”公子重耳对客曰：“君惠吊亡臣重耳。身丧父死，不得与于哭泣之哀，以为君忧。父死之谓何？或敢有他志，以辱君义。”稽颡而不拜，哭而起，起而不私。
子显以致命于穆公。穆公曰：“仁夫公子重耳！夫稽颡而不拜，则未为后也，故不成拜。哭而起，则爱父也。起而不私，则远利也。”

译文
晋国献公的丧期，秦国穆公派人慰问公子重耳，并且传达自己的话说：“寡人听说：失去国家（君主权）常常在这个时候，得到国家（君主权也）常常在这个时候。虽然我的先生您恭敬严肃，在忧伤的服丧期间，居丧也不可太久，时机也不可失去啊，年轻人，请考虑一下吧！”
（重耳）将这事告诉舅舅子犯。舅舅子犯说：“年轻人还是推辞吧。居丧之人没有值得宝贵的东西，可珍贵的只有仁爱和亲情。父亲死去这是何等重大的事情啊？还要用这事来谋利，那么天下谁能说清（我们无罪过）啊？年轻人还是推辞吧。”公子重耳（便）对（秦国的）客人说：“君王赏脸吊唁流亡的我重耳，（我）在父亲死去居丧（的时候），不能参与到哭泣（表达）悲哀的丧礼中去，而让您操心了。父亲死去这是何等重大的事情啊？（我）哪里还有其他的图谋来辜负您（来慰问我）的情义啊？”（重耳）行稽颡之礼但不拜谢（秦国来的客人），哭着起身，起身后但不（跟秦国来的客人）私下交谈。
子显复命将事情告诉穆公。穆公说：“仁人啊，公子重耳！叩拜但不拜谢，是他没已晋献公的继承人而自居，所以没有拜谢。哭着起身，就表示敬爱父亲。起身但不私谈，就表示远离个人利益啊。”

公子重耳对秦客鉴赏
公子重耳由于受骊姬的陷害，在晋献公在世时流亡国外。公元前651年，晋献公去世，晋国无主，秦穆公派使者到重耳处吊唁，并试探他是否有乘机夺位的意思。重耳和子犯摸不清穆公的真实意图，怕授人话柄，于己不利，于是婉言表态，得到穆公倍加赞许。
问过舅舅才做决定、学舌舅舅的话：“父死之谓何？”都充分显示出政客的虚伪、善于表演的实质。“爱父”、“远利”之说完全就是欺世盗名之辞。这些话由劝人夺权的秦穆公嘴中说出，就更是刻画出工于权谋的政客众生像。
