译文
水边的香蒲长得又嫩又长，微风吹来，蒲叶摇曳多姿，发出猎猎的响声，卖弄它那轻盈的体态和柔媚的舞姿。蜻蜓飞来，想要在蒲草的叶尖上停留，却不能自由自在地立稳。农历五月间，走在临平山下的路上，可以欣赏到汀洲间的水面上，盛开着许多鲜艳的荷花。
注释
临平：指临平山，在今浙江省杭州市东北。
风蒲猎猎：风吹蒲草发出的声响。蒲，多年生草本植物，也叫蒲草，茎可供编织用。猎猎，形容风声的象声词。
欲立：想要站立。这里是蜻蜓想要在蒲草上停留的意思。
藕花：荷花。
汀洲：水中平地或水边平地，这里指汀洲间的水面。

临平道中鉴赏
宋诗区别于唐诗的一个重要方面，就是宋诗更重视对画意的表现。考其原因，或许是宋代绘画特别发达，而许多知名作家又每兼具画家和诗人两种身份的缘故(顺便应该提到，宋代的题画诗也较之前代更为发达)。苏轼、米芾诸人固不必说，即如张公庠《道中》：“一年春色已成空，拥鼻微吟半醉中。夹路桃花新雨过，马蹄无处避残红。”郑獬《绝句》：“田家汩汩水流浑，一树高花明远村。云意不知残照好，却将微雨送黄昏。”武衍《湖边》：“日日湖边上小车，要寻红紫醉年华。东风合与春料理，忍把轻寒瘦杏花。”李显卿《溪行》：“枯木扶疏夹道旁，野梅倒影浸寒塘。朝阳不到溪湾处，留得横桥一板霜。”法具《东山》：“窗中远看眉黛绿，尽是当年歌吹愁。鸟语夕阳人不见，蔷薇花暗小江流。”都描写精工，诗中有画。道潜这首诗写蒲苇受风的声形，写蜻蜓在蒲苇上站立不稳的姿态，写临平山下，经行之处满眼盛开的荷花，也是充满浓重的画意，表现了宋诗在这一方面的典型特征。但是，诗人们所追求的诗中有画，并不是诗等于画，而是诗画相通，特色兼具。因为，一般说来，诗是动态艺术，画是静态艺术。此诗虽有画意，但强调了自然景物的声形、姿态，仍带有诗的特点，是二者完美结合的典范。所以，苏轼作为对诗画都非常内行的作家，一见此诗，就为之激赏。宗室曹夫人还根据诗意画了一幅《临平藕花图》。
诗描写五月仲夏临平山下水边风光，是“诗中有画”的佳作。首句推出一个近景：一片水边的蒲草，在风中翩翩起舞，好像是在表现自己轻柔的舞姿。次句，突出描写一只或数只蜻蜓，因风吹蒲动，想要站在蒲草上，总是身不由己，站不住。蜻蜓与风蒲仿佛在互相争戏，颇有风趣。第三句，承上启下，宛转变化，补叙出前两句所写风景的时间、地点、位置，也为结句的写景作了交代和铺垫。第四句，于风蒲背后展开自近到远的风景：在山下道路两边，一望无际的荷花开满了水面，鲜明地表现出夏日江南水乡清丽动人的景色。至此，一幅大小映衬、远近有致、动静相生、工笔与写意相结合的图画，便清晰而富有层次地展现在大家眼前。诗歌无一句一字抒情，却在所写景物中让读者感受到内心的闲适以及对热爱大自然的情感。
诗人把蒲草拟人化了，写得它像有知觉、有感情似的，在有意卖弄它的轻柔。蜻蜓欲立又不能自由停立的瞬间姿态，也写得很传神。作者静中写动，以动衬静的艺术技巧，十分高超。

道潜（1043—1106）北宋诗僧。本姓何，字参寥，赐号妙总大师。於潜（今属浙江临安）浮村人。自幼出家。与苏轼诸人交好，轼谪居黄州时，他曾专程前去探望。元祐中，住杭州智果禅院。因写诗语涉讥刺，被勒令还俗。后得昭雪，复削发为僧。著有《参寥子集》。
