译文
徐斯远眉宇间的气度风采超逸轩昂。我想您赴试就应该像王良驾驭马车一样轻车熟路，怎能不一试而中。我认为友人本来就不是池中之物，应该像蛟龙得云雨一样能够大展宏图。但是时机和命运的好坏还需要看天意如何。想那屈原的才华与人品就如同兰芷一样，却同样感慨时运不济，何况是我们这样的人呢。
主考官就像是当年左思误评扬雄之《甘泉赋》一样，不识徐斯远文章之妙，以致使其落第。友人徐斯远落第，其报国理想难以实现，就像是乘船去寻找传说中的仙山，因其虚无缥缈，所以总是难以到达。我只是笑着指着我的茅庐问道：看看如何？谓住所外长有千百株挺拔苍健的松柏，他们也都隐居山林，尚未得志。劝解友人暂时载酒带湖、乐而忘忧。
注释
贺新郎：“贺新郎”，词牌名之一。此调始见苏轼词，原名“贺新凉”，因词中有“乳燕飞华屋，悄无人，桐阴转午，晚凉新浴”句，故名。后来将“凉”字误作“郎”字。
王良：一名孙无政，晋之善御马者，为赵简子御。
骅骝（huáliú）：良马名，相传为周穆王八骏之一。
池中物：喻蛰居一隅、无远大抱负之人。
灵均：即屈原。
重华：舜的别号。
壹郁：忧闷。
三山：指传说中的蓬莱、方丈、瀛洲。
苍官：松柏的别称。
须髯（rán）：络腮胡子。

徐斯远庆元二年(1196)参加礼部考试，不第而归。信上友人纷纷携带酒肴前往慰问，徐斯远有词称谢，这首词是用原韵与徐斯远相唱和的，时间当还在这年的夏季，尚未移居瓢泉。

起韵先以一单句，勾勒出友人超逸轩昂的精神风采，是为起端定性，为下文的当遇而不遇张本。接韵顺势而下，写自己当初以为他的出试，就像善于驾车的王良驾着骏马拉着的车子上路一样，既是轻车熟路，想是必然高中。三韵再行渲染铺张，表明自己曾以为友人此番出试，定如暂时蜷缩于池中的蚊龙将要得雨一样，腾飞指日可待，高中是必然之势。在以王良和蚊龙为比，作了这样尽情的渲染之后，四韵忽然一跌，以时命犹待天意为辞，暗示出朋友的落第事实和落第的原因。这原因不是因为文才不足，而是因为时命不济。五韵以屈原犹且不遇为喻，表达他对友人落第的宽慰和不平感。屈原是个兰佩芳菲即品性高洁、才华过人的古代志士，他犹且无人过问，怀抱冷落，为此曾经激愤地向重华（舜）陈辞，那么友人的不遇岂不分所该当？这里的用典，既包含着词人对天下才士收场一例凄凉的悲愤感，又表达了他以重比轻、要友人看轻自己的落第的用意。上片末韵，由屈原和友人的不平遭遇而来，写出了他的同情式的理解。这里的“空”字、“共谁语”的反问，包含着浓烈的感情，表达的是才人在历史上总不得志的郁闷和孤独感。这是一石三鸟，既写出了落第友人的当下感受，也兼点出了屈原的感受，还隐含着词人自己的生命感受。
过片由己及人或者不如说由朋友及于考官，表达他对于考官无才乏学，埋没人才的讽刺。词人用“儿曹”称呼他们，就有鄙视之意。又以“扬雄赋”来形容友人妙文，措辞之间，褒贬立见。接韵讽刺考官看到友人妙文而不识其妙。反而觉得它很可怪。并判友人落第的无才无识。三韵运用典故，表明因为落第，友人的理想变成了可望而不可及之境的大恨。这里的典故运用几于妙化：事实的沧溟即大海可以象征人生的大海；海上三山望之在前、即之在下、寻访者被“风引船回”的神话，可以象征人对于理想追求的难以实现；人对于理想的仰望与被阻绝，与访求三山之人终究不得接近三山的情形相同。同时，这个典故特别能说明友人下第后的心理感受。四韵与上片四韵一样，在尽情地铺张后一笔掉转，形成词情的跌宕起伏。它一笔写出了友人抖落悲哀和怅恨、抖落人世浮尘而襟怀高朗、冲淡的新状态。这是一个摆落尘网、归心自然的高人散士的神态。“笑指”一词，犹为传神。以下由此引发，一气直下，仿佛久郁的心胸豁然开朗似的，写出友人归心带湖、载酒忘忧的风采。“门外”一韵，人与境谐。其门外千百株高大、古老的苍松翠柏，与门内不阿附屈曲的堂堂须眉，形成了异类同情的互喻。词首“逸气轩眉宇”的友人形象，再次得到了呼应。同时，松柏环聚的处所，也是幽人雅士的隐身之地，这就显出了友人淡泊功名的趣味。结韵暗扣题面“谢诸公载酒相访”，以邀请朋友们来到这门外有松柏、门内有高士的清幽带湖饮酒作乐，归结全篇。
全词表达出对友人落第表示安慰。虽然叠用典故，却贴切顺畅，全无堆砌累赘之感。风格郁愤舒放。

辛弃疾（1140－1207），南宋词人。原字坦夫，改字幼安，别号稼轩，汉族，历城（今山东济南）人。出生时，中原已为金兵所占。21岁参加抗金义军，不久归南宋。历任湖北、江西、湖南、福建、浙东安抚使等职。一生力主抗金。曾上《美芹十论》与《九议》，条陈战守之策。其词抒写力图恢复国家统一的爱国热情，倾诉壮志难酬的悲愤，对当时执政者的屈辱求和颇多谴责；也有不少吟咏祖国河山的作品。题材广阔又善化用前人典故入词，风格沉雄豪迈又不乏细腻柔媚之处。由于辛弃疾的抗金主张与当政的主和派政见不合，后被弹劾落职，退隐江西带湖。
