译文
露水寒冷烟气变凉，芦苇也不开花了。天边长途飞行的雁，声音凄清高远。银河光照下的秋天夜晚，灯光暗淡的西汉皇帝的离宫上空，一声雁鸣刚刚传，想起了在潇湘时的生活。水岸遥远，无人打扰，食物和水丰盛。俯望那无边的平坦田野，犹豫不定地想降落地上，但和以前一样，被风吹草动受惊而飞走了。
必须坚信万里之外的衡阳回雁峰是最好的栖息地，有谁愿意把我的书信送到遥远之地。不管远隔万里，但我相信鸿雁你经过艰苦飞行，总会把信送到。为了长生不老，仙人在月明的夜晚，以手掌擎盘承接天上的甘露。在石头城下，寒冷的江水里倒影摇动。想起在外丈夫的寒衣还未捣洗，心上人一挥动捣衣的木棒，就眼泪盈眶。
注释
①水龙吟：词牌名，又名“龙吟曲”“庄椿岁”“小楼连苑”。《清真集》入“越调”。一百二字，前后片各四仄韵。又第九句第一字并是领格，宜用去声。结句宜用上一、下三句法，较二、二句式收得有力。
②蒹葭（jiān jiā）老：芦苇不开花了。
③征鸿：长途飞行的雁鸟。寥唳：声音凄清高远。
④长门：西汉皇帝离宫，位于陕西长安城南。灯悄：灯光暗淡。
⑤潇湘：潇水与湘水会合处，在今零陵县，现以此泛称湖南。
⑥岸遥：水岸很远。
⑦菰（gū）米：又名雕菰米，茎可作饭。
⑧衡阳：今湖南省衡阳市，位于湘江中游。名胜古迹有回雁峰。它是南岳衡山七十二峰最高峰。相传北雁南归，到此为止不再向南飞了。
⑨锦书：织锦上书写文字的书信，代指妇人思念他乡丈夫的信。遥寄：指雁遥远传带书信。
⑩斜行横阵，才疏又缀：雁斜飞成“人”字，横飞成“一”字，刚刚散开，又马上靠拢。斜行：指雁飞成斜体形。横阵：指排成一条线。
⑪仙掌月明：为了长生不老，仙人在月明的夜晚，以手掌擎盘承接天上的甘露。
⑫石头城：古代金陵的别称，即现在的南京市。
⑬拂：挥动。杵（chǔ）：捣洗衣服的木捶。

宋神宗元丰七年（1084年）八月中旬，苏轼陪同王益柔从金陵，经仪真，去南都。在去仪真的路上，即景动情，思念暂住金陵的妻子。反其意点化活用唐代诗人杜牧《早雁》诗意，而作该词。

水龙吟·露寒烟冷蒹葭老鉴赏
上片，咏秋夜南归飞雁，暗示苏轼自己得其所归的愉悦心情。开头两句写秋景，隐喻自己远征而清高回归。“露寒”、“烟冷”、“蒹葭老”、“征鸿”，为典型的深秋景物，极为苍劲。远在“天外”的“征鸿”唱着“寥唳”的歌回归了，心情自然舒畅。接着五句，写深秋夜雁的美好归宿。“银河”光照的“秋晚”，“灯悄”寂寥的“长门”上空，一声雁鸣刚刚传来，“应念”乐土“潇湘”。“岸遥”，写雁归宿地宽阔。“人静”，写雁归宿地无干扰。“水多菰米”，写雁归宿地食品充足。言外之意，是指苏轼艰苦穷困的日子总算结束了，现在和“雁”一样，有将返回朝廷的机遇。最后四句，写雁归路上遇到小小风波，隐喻苏轼改移汝州仍有余悸。然而，一望仪真那无边无际的原野，被迷住了，“徘徊欲下”。但又出现“风”浪，只好照旧地“惊”而起飞，到那“潇湘”的“回雁峰”去。
下片，写鸿雁传书，寄寓妇女思念征人之情，反衬苏轼忠君的一番苦心。第一、二句写“衡阳万里”的“回雁峰”是乐山，应“须信”不疑。苏轼应诏回朝效命多年的心愿一直未改移。第二至五句，直写要托鸿雁帮忙，为苏轼“锦书遥寄”到金陵。不管“万里云外”多么遥远，但苏轼相信鸿雁经过“斜行横阵，才疏又缀”的跋涉，终将会把信送到的，词意富有人情味。第六、七、八句，用赞美石头城的词句，来交代家居的优美环境：在仙人承接甘露、“影摇寒水”的“石头城下”，有苏轼寄居的寒舍和妻妾。最后三句，近乎恳求，鸿雁哪，你见到了没有？苏轼那“佳人拂杵”，正在“念征衣未捣”，还“有盈盈泪”而为之伤心，此等思念，感人肺腑，催人泪下。
全词，借景抒情。名为咏物，实是抒发苏轼心境、志趣、感叹，可以说是伦理道德的衍化物。以鸿雁自况，咏物喻志，是苏轼黄州词创作的一大特色。

苏轼（1037－1101），北宋文学家、书画家、美食家。字子瞻，号东坡居士。汉族，四川人，葬于颍昌（今河南省平顶山市郏县）。一生仕途坎坷，学识渊博，天资极高，诗文书画皆精。其文汪洋恣肆，明白畅达，与欧阳修并称欧苏，为“唐宋八大家”之一；诗清新豪健，善用夸张、比喻，艺术表现独具风格，与黄庭坚并称苏黄；词开豪放一派，对后世有巨大影响，与辛弃疾并称苏辛；书法擅长行书、楷书，能自创新意，用笔丰腴跌宕，有天真烂漫之趣，与黄庭坚、米芾、蔡襄并称宋四家；画学文同，论画主张神似，提倡“士人画”。著有《苏东坡全集》和《东坡乐府》等。
