彩饰的小船停下船桨，槿花篱笆外，横着一座小竹桥。水上的游人问沙岸上的姑娘家住何处，（姑娘）回过头来，笑着指向芭蕉林深处。
注释
南乡子：词牌名。
画舸：彩饰的小船。桡：船桨。
槿花：木槿花落叶灌木，有红、白、紫等色花。南方民间经常在院子四周种植，长大一些后即可作为篱笆，称为篱槿。
沙上女：沙滩上的女孩子。

欧阳炯生在战乱时期，此词是他流落南方某地，乘坐小舟游览时，偶遇到一位貌美女子，有感所作。

南乡子·画舸停桡鉴赏
统观欧阳词，如一人而有二面。其艳情词艳得近于淫靡，轻佻俳狎，几乎难以卒读。然如《南乡子》八首，却换了一副笔墨，一洗绮罗香泽，转为写景纪俗之词，全写广南百越少数民族地区风物。读其词，如夏日清风、久雨新晴，心神为之一爽。
这是八首之二，写景如画，写情传神，将广南少女的真率、羞涩，质朴的情状活脱脱显于纸上。词的开头两句，宛如一幅南国水乡图，而且是静物素描，不加渲染，不事润色。炎炎长夏，船儿不动，桨儿不摇，近处是以木槿花为篱（木槿为广南常见之物，夏秋间开花，红白相间，当地人常以为篱）的茅舍，远处是依稀可见的横江竹桥，静极了，也天然极了。而“画舸”与“槿花”两相辉映，又使恬静素淡之中平添了几分艳雅，也为痴男情女的出场作了引信。
下片写男女初聚之情。“水上游人”指远方来客，即“画舸”中的男子；“沙上女”与“水上游人”相对为文，即以槿花为篱的茅舍的主人，立于沙头的一位少女。至此，词人又为读者在南国水乡图上叠印了一幅仕女图，尽管这幅仕女图似乎也是静的，不过已经呼之欲出，跃跃欲动了。男子，总是主动的，勇敢的，他伫立良久，便上前问话了，问女子姓甚名谁，年庚几许，家在何处。不过，这些作者都没有写，是画外之音，是省文，但却不是凭空结想。且看，这位情窦初开的少女，欲答，又羞于答，她转身走了。走了，又不甘心，却又回头顾盼，“笑指芭蕉林里住”。这“芭蕉林”，或者就是“槿花篱”的旁景，或者竟是这女子撒了一个谎：“家可远哩，在芭蕉深处。”结句的答话，将全词的静景一下子点活了。原来“画舸”之所以要“停桡”，是因为男子被女子所吸引；槿篱竹桥，也几等于北方的“桑间濮上”；水上沙上，跃动着初恋者的倩影。
李白有《陌上赠美人》诗云：“骏马骄行踏落花，垂鞭直拂五云车。美人一笑褰珠箔，遥指红楼是妾家。”正与此词相近。然一指红楼，一指蕉林，各是自家身分。李清照《点绛唇》有句曰：“和羞走，依门回首，却把青梅嗅。”与此词的写“回顾”同一笔意。盖“回顾”这一动作最能传女子的娇羞之态，故诗人每每写及。然彼一回顾而依门嗅梅，此一回顾而笑答客问，北国千金与水乡村姑的腔范就判然分明了。
