译文
桥的倒影像彩虹在水中流动，湖光山色映衬着雪一般的波浪，翠绿的窗帘不曾挂起，使人感到春天更深将归他方。她那一寸秋波似的眼睛忽然看到，那牵新她柔肠的人出现在楼阴里。无奈游动的情丝系不住他的羊车，又能请谁作青鸟为她传语？最使她难以禁受的是，倚遍雕花栏杆再也看不见他，梦遍绫罗被褥也无法和他相遇。
他再次来到这里，已见她如巫山神女化作胡云散去，他帐怨她如佩戴的明珠已经变冷，又如紫玉像轻烟一缕沉入地底。前次来时看到的桃花，如今依然开满江边之地，他也是无限钟情的人，最怕再看到引人相思的路，只盼长提上长满红心草，为他答谢她的深情蜜意。啊，他感动得发出了愁苦的低吟，上穷碧落下黄泉，两处茫茫皆难觅。
注释
高阳台：词牌名，又名《庆春泽》。双调一百字，前后片各四平韵，亦有于两结三字逗处增叶一韵者。
叶元礼：叶舒崇，字元礼，江苏吴江人，康熙丙辰（1676年）进士，官中书舍人。
流虹桥：《苏州府志》：“流虹桥在吴江县城外同里镇。”
雪：这里指明亮的水波。
横波：比喻眼神流动如水波。
断肠人：指词中的女主人公，
游：空中飘动的蛛丝。羊车：羊拉的小车，多用于宫廷或供儿童乘坐。倩（qìng）：请求。青禽：即青鸟，相传为西王母的信使。
难禁：受不了。
朝（zhāo）云散：用巫山神女化作一片朝云散去，比喻少女之死。明珠佩冷：身上佩戴的明珠随少女死而冷却。紫玉烟沉：典见干宝《搜神记》：吴王夫差小女名紫玉，悦童子韩重，私许为妻。王不许，紫玉悒郁而死后魂归见，吴王夫人出抱紫玉，紫玉如烟而逝。
前度桃花：暗指桃花虽盛开，而美如桃花的人面却一去杳然。
江浔（xún）：江边，
草尽红心：唯有盼望长堤上的芳草，每年都长出像丹心一样的红心，借以答谢少女的深情。
“碧落黄泉”：天上地下。

高阳台·桥影流虹创作背景
这是一首以记叙之笔写哀艳之情的作品。词的小序概述了这个爱情故事。吴江叶元礼，少年时有一天经过流虹桥。有少女在楼上，一见钟情，日夜思慕，竟至悒郁成疾，绝望而死。气方绝，适叶元礼复过其门女母以女临终之言告叶，叶入大哭，女目始瞑。作者有感而写下了这首词。

高阳台·桥影流虹鉴赏
上片写少女怀春。词的开头三句“桥影流虹，湖光映雪，翠帘不卷春深”，写故事发生地，点和季节，生动地描绘了太湖之滨的江南景色。接着词人以“一寸横波，断肠人在楼阴”两句展示她一见钟情，而又无从诉说的心态，她独处楼阴，心事无人理解，而又羞于表露，不免黯然伤神，低回肠断。然而这里揭示的，还只是这位少女初步的心态，下文两句乃作深层的展露。“游丝不系羊车住，倩何人、传语青禽”，“羊车”，词人用这两个典故，表明这位少女陷身于不能自拔的眷恋。游丝既系不住那人所乘的车子，也无法请人用青禽为她传情表意。她的怅惘之情，只有埋藏在深沉的苦闷之中，内心世界无由吐露，“最难禁，倚遍雕阑，梦遍罗衾”她最难忍受的是叶元礼离去之后，便是望穿双眼，日思夜梦，都见不到那人的影子，日复一日，长期的单恋，终至一病不起，魂归离恨之天。
下片写叶元礼还情，换头“重来正是朝云散，怅明珠佩冷，紫玉烟沉”，写叶元礼复见少女之时，少女已玉体冰凉，香魂风散。这里的“朝云”、“明珠”、“紫玉”，均为极富传奇色彩的形象，用来比喻殉情的少女，十分贴切，同时也为叶元礼抒写了对少女深切的悼念之情。下一韵“前度桃花，依然开满江浔”，桃花两度，崔护喜结良缘；而叶元礼，“复过其门”，见到的却是死不瞑目的少女，个中的巨大苦痛，实在震撼人心。“钟情怕到相思路，盼长堤草尽红心”，一“怕”一“盼”，用笔极尽曲致之妙，写尽叶元礼对少女的一片深情。叶元礼希望长堤附近凡触目处都是红心草，以寄托他对少女难已的哀思，这“草尽红心”的愿望能否变为现实不得而知，故尔只能愁苦地吟唱“上穷碧落下黄泉，两处茫茫皆不见”，白居易这刻画明皇贵妃生死恋情的名句被朱彝尊化为“碧落黄泉，两处谁寻”。而且词句与白诗原句的情思也完全一致。
这首词用典圆熟，其中许多典故被融在词句之中，非明指不见痕迹。

朱彝尊(1629～1709)，清代诗人、词人、学者、藏书家。字锡鬯，号竹垞，又号驱芳，晚号小长芦钓鱼师，又号金风亭长。汉族，秀水（今浙江嘉兴市）人。康熙十八年（1679）举博学鸿词科，除检讨。二十二年（1683）入直南书房。曾参加纂修《明史》。博通经史，诗与王士祯称南北两大宗。作词风格清丽，为浙西词派的创始者，与陈维崧并称朱陈。精于金石文史，购藏古籍图书不遗余力，为清初著名藏书家之一。
