其父虽善游，其子岂遽善游哉？以此任物，亦必悖矣。

译文
有个经过江边的人，看见一个人正带着一个小孩想把他投到江里，小孩吓得直哭。这人问他原因，那人回答：“这孩子的父亲擅长游泳。”
孩子的父亲虽然擅长游泳，这个小孩难道也立即会游泳吗？ .用这种观点对待事物,也一定是违反常理的。

善：擅长。
岂：难道。
这：的人。
方引：正带着，牵着。方，正在。
遽急：立即。
以此任物：用这种观点来对待事物。任，对待。任物：对待事物。以：用。
悖：违反。
过于江上：经过江边。
引：带着，抱着。
之：代词，指婴儿。
父善游创作背景
《吕氏春秋》是战国末年（公元前“239”年前后）秦国丞相吕不韦组织属下门客们集体编撰的杂家（儒家、法家、道家等等）著作，又名《吕览》。此书共分为十二纪、八览、六论，共十二卷，一百十六篇，二十余万字。在公元前239年写成，当时正是秦国统一六国前夜。
父善游鉴赏
父善游讲述的是古代有个经过江边的人，看见一个人正带着一个小孩想把他投到江里，小孩吓得直哭。这人问他原因，那人回答：“这孩子的父亲擅长游泳。”孩子的父亲虽然擅长游泳，这个小孩难道也立即会游泳吗？.用这种观点对待事物，也一定是违反常理的。
故事告诉我们，知识与技能是无法遗传的。一个人单纯强调先天智力和体能因素的作用，而忽视后天刻苦学习的重要性，那是幼稚可笑的。
