郑人有欲买履者，先自度其足，而置之其坐。至之市，而忘操之。已得履，乃曰：“吾忘持度。”反归取之。及反，市罢，遂不得履。人曰：“何不试之以足？”曰：“宁信度，无自信也。”

译文
有个想要买鞋子的郑国人，先测量好自己脚的尺码，把尺码放在他的座位上，等到前往集市，却忘了带量好的尺码。已经拿到鞋子，却说：“我忘记带量好的尺码了。”就返回家去取量好的尺码。等到他返回集市的时候，集市已经散了，最后郑国人没能买到鞋子。
有人问他说：“为什么你不用自己的脚去试一试呢?”
他说：“我宁可相信量好的尺码，也不相信自己的脚。”

选自《韩非子·外储说左上》。郑：春秋时代郑国，在现今河南省的新郑县。
欲：将要，想要。
者：（怎么样）的人。（定语后置）
先：首先，事先。
度（duó）：衡量。用尺子度量的意思（动词）
而：顺承连词 意为然后
置： 放，搁在。（动词）
之：代词，它，此处指量好的尺码。
其：他的，指郑人的。（代词）
坐：通“座”，座位。
至：等到。
之：到……去，前往。（动词）
操：拿、携带。（动词）

郑人买履鉴赏
这个郑国人只相信量脚得到的尺码，而不相信自己的脚，不仅闹出了大笑话，而且连鞋子也买不到，成为了笑柄。而现实生活中，买鞋子只相信脚码而不相信脚的事，只懂死守教条而不懂变通的人，可能是不会有的吧？但类似这样的人，的确是有的。而且并不少。有的人说话、办事、想问题，只从书本出发，不从实际出发；书本上写到的，他就相信，书本上没有写但实际上存在着的，他就不相信。在这种人看来，只有书本上的才是真理，没写上的就不是真理。这样，思想当然就要僵化，行动就容易碰壁。

韩非子生于周赧王三十五年（约公元前281年），卒于秦王政十四年（公元前233年），韩非为韩国公子（即国君之子），汉族，战国末期韩国人(今河南省新郑）。师从荀子，是中国古代著名的哲学家、思想家，政论家和散文家，法家思想的集大成者，后世称“韩子”或“韩非子”，中国古代著名法家思想的代表人物。
