译文
钟鼓寒重，楼阁晦暗，月光照着金井边的古桐。深深的院落紧闭，小小的庭院空寂，落花沾着香露铺满了一地残红。
烟柳重重，春雾淡薄，在高阁临水的窗前，灯光就要渐渐熄灭，眼见天色就要亮了。她百无聊赖地倚靠着门户，眼泪暗暗地落下来沾湿了衣裳，她苦苦等待情郎归来，他却迟迟不归。
注释
更漏子：词牌名，双调四十六字，上下片各六句，两仄韵、两平韵。
钟鼓寒：传来的钟鼓声似乎带着寒气。
暝（míng）：昏暗。
古桐：老桐。
金井：以铜为栏的井。
灯背：意思是掩灯。
水窗：临水之窗。一作“小窗”。
暗沾衣：即暗中流泪沾湿衣服。
郎不归：一作“归未归”。

更漏子·钟鼓寒鉴赏
上片一开始，词人就借助于丰富的想象，给这位思妇造成一种孤独的氛围，一个寂寞的环境，在“钟鼓”之后着一“寒”字，而冷清之意全见：在“楼阁”之后缀一“瞑”字，而昏暗之色如绘。加上那轮淡淡的冷月，照在井边的老桐树上。多情的思妇独立小庭，无语凝思。这是从女主人公的视觉来写客观的景物。深深的院落关得紧紧的，小小的庭除显得空荡荡的，她伫立闲阶，逐渐看到露儿滴了，红色的花瓣带着浓郁的香气悄悄地落了下来，从而把自己的寂寞生活跟落花的飘零命运联系起来。这是从女主人公的感觉来写客观景物的。客观景物都带有思妇主观的感情色彩，即景即情，亦人亦物，不知何者为人，何者为物，何者为景，何者为情，浑然一体，妙合无垠，使凑者从中得到很好的审美享受。这个意境，跟李白《菩萨蛮》的“暝色入高楼，有人楼上愁”极其相似。该词让那个脉脉含情的思妇隐藏在画面之外，用烘托的手法，揭示了思妇的内心世界，读来韵味无穷。
下片是从时间的推移上，继续用景语来烘托思妇的愁绪。露重雾稀，杨柳低垂，已是黎明的景象，而那个思妇仍然背着灯儿，守着窗儿，渴望着她的心上人。这“灯背水窗高阁”，恰到好处地表现思妇幽居独处而产生的孤独黯伤的心理。“闲倚户”三句，“倚户”为了“待郎”，泪下“沾衣”，是因“郎不归”。“闲”是无事可做，但这里的“闲”又不是无事可做，“街户待郎”便是极要紧的事，不过表面看上去似乎确是无事可做。“暗沾衣”的“暗”，乃是昕望不遂，悲从中来，泪下沾衣而不自知。可谓无一字不加意著力。如果说“钟鼓寒”三句，是“月上柳梢头”的薄暮，那么“深院闭”三句，就是“灯火已三更”的深夜，而“烟柳重”三句，则是“曙色东方才动”的黎明了。从时间的推移上，表明思妇凝望之久，痴情之重，在满怀希望的期待中，逐步走向失望的过程。“待郎郎不归”是作者点睛之笔，又是思妇伤心之语。执此句以回读上文，更感觉其中步步置景设色之妙。
全词以景语为主，只在结尾三句写到女主人公的神态、心态，以此点明主题，强化景语效果。用疏钟、淡月、坠露、昏灯等景物，造成一种凄凉寂寞的氛围，又用纾缓、低沉、呜咽、断续的旋律，加深思妇的无可奈何的愁思。形式上虽然没有出现愁苦的字眼，骨子里却充满着哀怨的感情。
