译文
青鸟从海上飞来，现在要去哪里？
口里衔着盛有锦囊的书简，交给我，又忽地飞去。
青乌飞走了，直入紫色的云霄，送来的书简就留在了绮窗的前面。
打开信封不由得笑起来，这封信原来是老朋友发来的。
在信中，友人一再情深意切地勉励我，说他因怀念我而心中忧伤。
分别后他就住在咸阳，如今已三次见到秦地的草绿草黄。
我把这封信珍贵地藏在袖里，渴望见到友人，眺望远方。
伫望虽久，哪里有友人的身影？只有浮云缠绕着远方的山岗。
注释
青鸟：《汉武故事》：“七月七日，上于承华殿斋正中，忽有一青鸟从西方来，集殿前。上问东方朔，朔曰：此西王母欲来也。有顷王母至。”后因以青鸟称神仙的信使。
云锦书：形容来信如云霞一样华美。
凌紫烟：翱翔于紫色的烟霞之上。李善《昭明文选》注：“古《白鸿颂》曰：‘兹亦耿介，矫翮紫烟。‘”
绮窗：雕饰华美的窗户。
开缄：开封，打开信。
故人：老友，指元丹丘。
勖：劝勉。
心曲：心田，心间。《诗·国风》：“乱我心曲。”劳心曲：劳费心神。
离居：离群索居；咸阳：代指长安。
双袂：双袖。
引领：伸长了脖子眺望。
杳：渺远。

以诗代书答元丹丘创作背景
元丹丘是诗人李白的好友。李白在作这首诗的时候，已在京城长安拼搏了三年，即天宝三年（744），元丹丘给李白写信来给他打气鼓励，于是李白就写了这首诗，权作回信。

这首诗开篇六句以神奇恍宕之笔，借古诗中常用的传书使者青鸟为喻，巧妙地交待了接到友人来书的事件。从“青鸟海上来”到“书留绮窗前’’，其间似虚似实，变幻曲折，想象奇妙。
“开缄”二句，承接上文，点明就里。“一笑”，见出诗人打开书后由疑虑转为快慰的心态变化；称元丹丘为“故人’’，说明二人交往已早，情谊深厚。下面二句交待来书内容。“深相勖”，见出勉励之切；“劳心曲”，见出忆念之深。这两句诗，将来书内容全部囊括，将元丹丘对诗人既勉励又忆念的一片深情表露无遗。
最后六句转从诗人一方着笔，写他对友人的真挚怀念。“离居”二句借“咸阳”代指长安，表明诗人在长安已滞留了三年之久；一个“秦草绿”，已暗寓诗人见春草而思友之意。“置书”二句用“引领不暂闲’’力状诗人翘首远望的神态，正面表现浓重而炽热的思友情感。最后两句写望而不见的怅惘之情。“浮云横远山”，境界迷蒙而苍茫，以此作结，含蓄蕴藉，无限愁思流溢于言语之外。
同时这首诗有两点需要注意。一是青鸟的形象及其在这首诗中的作用。青鸟是神鸟，是西王母的使者。传说在西汉时候，汉武帝看到一只青鸟飞来，然后，西王母就到了。在这首诗里，青鸟就充当了李白的好朋友的信使。诗人天真地想：从东方飞来的信使呀，你具体是从哪里飞来的呢？衔着一封信来，丢到我手里就飞走了。天边云里，不见了你的身影，只有那封信还是实实在在的。很显然，诗人从神话里借来青鸟的形象，让这个可爱的小精灵传递自己与好朋友之间的思念。于是这种思念就显得很美。
另一点要注意的是诗人的神态。是谁的来信呢？打开一看，是好朋友的，诗人由衷而笑。老朋友在信中一方面勉励诗人要克服困难，一定要在京城站稳脚跟；另一方面也表达了自己的思念之情。读着来信，诗人不禁想到自己在长安已经三年，芳草绿了又黄了，黄了又绿了。三年过去了，自己却不能和亲密好友相聚。遥望好友的方向，浮云、远山截断思念的路。
这里诗人的心情有一个先是开心后来忧伤的转化过程。接到友人的来信，知道是友人写的，无疑给在尘世中打拼的诗人以温暖的安慰。但诗人又被信中内容勾起了对以往美好时光的回忆。
总体来说，这首诗清新俊逸，舒卷自如，写情而不外露，写景而含深情，配以奇妙的想象和形象的画面，盎然有味。

李白（701年－762年），字太白，号青莲居士，唐朝浪漫主义诗人，被后人誉为“诗仙”。祖籍陇西成纪(待考)，出生于西域碎叶城，4岁再随父迁至剑南道绵州。李白存世诗文千余篇，有《李太白集》传世。762年病逝，享年61岁。其墓在今安徽当涂，四川江油、湖北安陆有纪念馆。
