译文
前朝人物，现在已经不多。眼前江山依旧，光阴快似飞梭。京都的繁华，西湖的富贵，只让人感叹高歌。
麒麟冢王侯将相，身后也很坎坷；风凰台风流英华，岁月同榉蹉跎。生，将又如何？死，又将如何?只有留在纸上的清白名声，千年万代也不会消磨。
注释
折桂令：曲牌名，又称蟾宫曲。《录鬼簿（bù）》：是元朝末年一部专门记录散曲、戏剧作家生平事迹的著作，作者为文学家、散曲家钟嗣成。
贞元朝士无多：这里作者用“贞元朝士”，代指元曲作家和艺术家。
上苑：指皇家的花园，这里代指元代的京城大都。西湖：指杭州。大都、杭州是元戏曲家云集的地方。
总付：都交给。
麒麟冢：麒麟是古代传说中表示吉祥的神兽，是龙的子女。古人常用它来表示杰出的人物。衣冠：指当官的人。
凤凰台：在今南京。传说晋代年间有鸟汇集此处，人们称它们为凤凰。这里代指人才汇集之地。蹉跎：失时，不珍惜时光。
纸上：指《录鬼簿》书中。

折桂令·题录鬼簿创作背景
这首散曲是为题咏钟嗣成的《录鬼簿》而作，作品从钟嗣成编纂《录鬼簿》的用意和所录作家的坎坷命运着眼，表达了对元曲作家的热情赞颂。

折桂令·题录鬼簿鉴赏
该曲共分三层，“想贞元朝士无多，满目江山，日月如梭”为第一层，化用唐刘禹锡诗句，感叹艺苑的英才已纷纷过世，入于《录鬼簿》中，江山依旧，岁月悠悠，令人无限伤感。开头就从一个“想”字说起，劈面而来，在让人感到突兀之余，也让人感到凝重，让人觉得这支曲子不是游戏之作，对《录鬼簿》的评价是严肃可信的。紧接着，推出了空间意象“满目江山”和时间意象“日月如梭”。缅怀古人的情思与时空意象的组合、交织，就超越了一时一地的特定时空意义，表达了涵盖古今的人生感慨：江山长存，岁月无情，人生与之相比，真如白驹过隙，何其短暂。这两个意象的出现，使首句染上了更为苍凉的色调，令人低回不已。
紧接三句“上苑繁华，西湖富贵，总付高歌。麒麟冢衣冠坎坷，凤凰台人物蹉跎”为第二层，提出了一个如何看待繁华富贵的问题。在作者看来，人世沧桑，荣华富贵如过眼烟云，而且与之相伴的也往往是“坎坷”和“蹉跎”，它没有什么值得称许的。前代的秦始皇、汉武帝、唐太宗、宋太祖，连同他们的文治武功，都已经成了樵唱渔歌的材料，历史上的功臣名将到而今都已成了地下的一坏黄土。即是说生死富贵都是没有意义，没有价值的。对富贵的否定也就衬托了对《录鬼簿》的褒扬，肯定了这部为缅怀故人、为曲坛名公才人立传的著作是万古不朽的，他的价值是超越千古的。
最后四句“生待如何，死待如何？纸上清名，万古难磨”为第三层，作者亮出了自己的人生价值观。作者认为人生价值体现于文学事业之中，把文学事业提到了超乎生死、跨越时空的高度。重视文学事业，这是中国典型的文人意识，但这种观点并未越出儒家将“立言”与“立德”、“立功”并提的传统功利观念的框框。作者则不然，他此曲为《录鬼簿》题词，缅怀的是被正统文人鄙视的艺人才士，肯定的是被摒于正统文学之外的通俗文学，张扬的是具有反传统意义的人生价值观。蔑视“已死之鬼”，赞颂“不死之鬼”，这就是本文作者与《录鬼簿》作者共同的价值判断。
