“干杯”英文“Toast”，这个词16世纪在爱尔兰的原意是烤面包。当时葡萄酒含酸量比较高，爱尔兰教徒招待人们饮酒时，习惯把一片烤面包放入一杯酒中来吸收酸味。在莎士比亚著作之一《温莎的风流妇人》也提到，约翰．福斯塔夫爵士告诉佣人：Go fetch me a quart of sack； put a toast in't（帮我盛上一壶酒，放一片吐司在里面），表示在当时红酒里面放吐司并不稀奇。怪不得大家举杯会说上一句，“都在酒里”，原来酒里真的有东西呀。因此，逐渐“make a toast”变成“敬酒”的意思，现在虽然已经不再放吐司在红酒里了，但是仍旧代表着一种饮酒前的祝福与心意提升，当然，Make a toast（放吐司）的人要记得说两句祝福的话，再一起举杯Cheers（干杯）。
干杯最常见的翻译是cheers，但干杯的英文表达还有很多，快和皮卡丘一起学习地道表达吧。

cheers是个常见的英语感叹词，除了干杯，还有这几种用法。

在美国，cheers只有干杯这一个意思，美国人和朋友碰杯时才会说cheers
②谢谢、再见
在英国，cheers还表示谢谢和再见，在生活中的出现频率很高。英国人既用cheers向人致谢，也用cheers和朋友告别。
小伙伴要是和英国人聊天时，不要每次都说thankyou和seeyou，用cheers会让对方感到更自然亲切。

英文单词spirit是个多义词，主要指“精神”、“灵魂”和“情绪”。其复数形式spirits泛指各种烈性酒，包括威士忌(whisky)、白兰地(brandy)、杜松子酒(gin)、朗姆酒(rum)等。工业酒精或乙醇也可用这个单词，外科医生用的消毒酒精(surgical spirit)还是用这个词。显然，用spirit指代汉语“白酒”并不合适。
第二个容易用错的单词是liquor。这个单词源于法语，本义与借自法语的另一单词liquid(液体)有关。在美国，liquor指用蒸馏法酿制的各种烈性酒;泛指时，与spirits同义。同时，含有酒精的任何烈性酒在美国都可以用liquor或hard liquor表达。不过美国的liquor不包括葡萄酒和啤酒;但在英国，liquor可以指任何一种含有酒精成分的饮品，包括葡萄酒和啤酒。
单词alcohol源于阿拉伯语，指“酒精”，具体指的是葡萄酒、啤酒、白兰地和威士忌等中的酒精成分。所以，含有酒精的饮品都可以被称作alcoholic drinks。英语句子“She never touches alcohol”的意思是她从不沾酒。和spirits一样，alcohol也可指代乙醇。不仅如此，甲醇和乙醇的英文名称也都含有alcohol这个词。
古英语单词ale现在用的较少，通常指代啤酒，尤其是酒精度数较高的啤酒。古英语单词wine则专指“葡萄酒”，即葡萄发酵之后酿制的酒，根据颜色不同可分为两种：红葡萄酒和白葡萄酒。糖分完全转化成酒精的红葡萄酒简称干红。需要注意的是：wine既不能泛指各种酒类饮品，也不能统称各种酒水。在英语口语中，可用fire-water(火水)指烈性酒，但英语国家烈性酒的度数大概也只是白酒的三分之二。在吃喝方面，中国人胆大，什么都敢吃，度数再高的酒也敢喝。还有的人把白酒一律称为maotai，这个不必多说，大家觉得合适吗来自鑫醉网红酒百科
显然，以上7种说法都不适合用来指代“白酒”。除了这7种说法以外，似乎还有更聪明的中国人：如果身边坐的是欧美人或澳洲人，他会说白酒是Chinese whisky(中国威士忌);如果客人来自俄罗斯，他会说那是Chinese vodka(中国伏特加)。这些说法属于现代洋泾浜英语(详见《英语发展史》81 英语和汉语的交流)，都不够精确，都只能说个大概。
