奥林匹克格言“更快、更高、更强”Faster，Higher，Stronger，是鼓励运动员要继续不断的参加运动、努力求进步与追求自我的突破。原文为古拉丁语 Citius，Altius，Fortius，由一位古柏坦的好友，巴黎阿尔克依学院Arcueil College老师迪登 Henri Didon （多米尼加神父）于1890年左右首先使用，他为了使全班学生第一次到室外运动场上去参加运动，当时他以这种口与来鼓励学生。这三个字给了古柏坦极深的印象及体会，决定为国际奥会所采用，遂于1920年第七届奥运会在安特卫普举行时兴五环旗同时正式出现奥运会中。
奥林匹克运动有一句著名的格言：“更快、更高、更强”。这句格言是顾拜旦的好友，巴黎阿奎埃尔修道院院长亨利·迪东在其学生举行的一次户外运动会上，鼓励学生们时说的：“在这里，你们的口号是：更快、更高、更强。”顾拜旦借用过来，成为奥林匹克格言。这句话充分表达了奥林匹克运动不断进取、永不满足的奋斗精神。虽然只有短短的六个字，而其中的含义却非常丰富。它既是指在竞技场上，面对强手时，发扬大无畏的精神，敢于斗争，敢于胜利。也是指对自己永不满足，不断地战胜自己，向新的极限冲击。不仅如此，这句格言还鼓励人们应该在自己生活的各个方面不断地超越自我、不断地更新，永远保持勃勃的朝气。 奥林匹克运动是在奥林匹克主义指导下, 以体育运动和四年一度的奥林匹克庆典——奥运会为主要活动内容, 促进人的生理、心理和社会道德全面发展, 沟通各国人民之间的相互了解, 在全世界普及奥林匹克主义, 维护世界和平的国际社会运动。奥林匹克运动包括以奥林匹克主义为核心的思想体系, 以国际奥委会、国际单项体育联合会和各国奥委会为骨干的组织体系和以奥运会为周期的活动体系。
“更快、更高、更强”的内涵是非常丰富的。它充分表达了奥林匹克运动不断进取、永不满足的奋斗精神和不畏艰险、敢攀高峰的拼搏精神。在比赛场上，面对强手，发扬勇往直前的大无畏精神，敢于斗争，敢于胜利。对自己则是永不满足，不断战胜自己，超越自己，实现新的目标，达到新的境界。对自然要敢于征服，克服大自然给人类带来的各种各样的限制，挣脱自然对我们的束缚而取得更大的自由。
顾拜旦本人在推崇“更快、更高、更强”的同时，又大力主张把“团结、和平、进步”作为奥林匹克运动所追求的最根本的目标。“团结、友谊、和平、进步”现今已不仅是奥林匹克运动以及世界体坛的宗旨，而＿日还成了全人类所需要、向往和追求的共同目标。
“参与比取胜更重要”
“参与比取胜更重要”是奥林匹克运动广为流传的名言，是奥林匹克的信念。这是顾拜旦于1908年7月24日，在伦敦举行第4届奥运会期间英国政府所举行的招待宴会上发表重要讲话时，所引用在圣保罗组织的运动员颁发仪式上宾夕法尼亚主教的一段话：“对奥林匹克运动会来说，参与比取胜更重要。”顾拜旦引用了这句话后还作了精辟的解释：“生活中重要的不是凯旋而是奋牛，其精髓不是为了获胜而是使人类变得更勇敢、更健壮、更谨慎和更落落大方。这是我们国际奥委会的指导思想。
“参与”的可贵之处在于“参与者”有着高尚的品质、真诚的态度、奉献的精神和理想的追求，其意义远远超过了名次和奖牌。在参与中，运动员们才能不断地超越自己和超越他人，才能在更快、更高、更强之中寻找自我，实现自我。所以“参与”意识正是世界各国和各地区绝大多数运动员参加奥林匹克运动的精神支柱。
正是由于“参与”意识和“参与”精神所起的作用，奥林匹克运动才能发展到今天这样的规模，其意义才能大大超出竞技体育的范围。奥运会正是因为有众多得不到奖牌或名次的国家、地区的许多运动员的参加，才推动了奥林匹克自身的成长和壮大，而且通过各国运动员的友谊和交往，对全世界的和平以及全人类的进步事业作出了难能可贵的贡献。
奥林匹克运动的格言和信条

奥林匹克格言，亦称奥林匹克座右铭或口号，系奥林匹克运动宗旨之一。奥林匹克格言是："更快、更高、更强"。它是国际奥委会对所有参与奥林匹克运动的人们的号召，号召他们本着奥林匹克的精神奋力向上。这句格言是顾拜旦的一位密友迪东于1895年在其学生举行的一次户外活动上提出的，顾拜旦对此颇为赞赏，经他提议，1913年获国际奥委会正式批准，将其定为奥林匹克格言。1920年它又成为奥林匹克标志的一部分。
