译文
巡视在停云刚种下的杉树时，游戏之作。本来给亲旧朋友回信的，然而纸笔被大风吹走，唯有写下这首词。
叹老来唯以料理空山为事，满山松杉，亲手栽种。何日才长大成阴，我还能有几年，好似见晚生的儿孙成人。古来多少水榭楼馆，转眼成了荒草荆棘，长使后人凄凉断魂。想当年良辰美景烟消云散，空成遗恨无限。
站在停云高处，谁知我老来投闲惟静，不问世间万事。梦醒东窗，闲居无聊，起身欲给亲友写信。片刻间，风怒号，倒翻纸笔，似天亦教我偷懒。可为什么，又突然片云昏暗，急雨来催诗。
注释
永遇乐：词牌名，又名“永遇乐慢”“消息”。正体双调一百四字，前后段各十一句、四仄韵。
停云：停云堂，是作者在铅山居所的西北隐湖山上修建的一处建筑，按陶渊明诗意，取名为停云。
投老：将老，临老。
政：通”正”。尔：如此，这般。
阴：同“荫”。指松树何时长大成材。
凄断：凄伤断肠，伤感。
夜阑：深夜。
聊复尔耳：聊且如此而已。
何事：为何。
斗暗：突然昏暗。

永遇乐·投老空山创作背景
这首词作于庆元三、四年（1197～1198年）间。当时辛弃疾罢居瓢泉，停云瓢泉新居有停云堂。题停云而思亲友，正反映了作者在迫害面前孤军奋战企求援助的心态。

永遇乐·投老空山鉴赏
本词最显眼之处是其题目长达三十字，像一段叙说缘由的序言，提示了全词的主要内容是由新种杉树和修书未成引起的感慨，题虽为“戏作”，却非常真实地表现了词人在刚落职闲居时的不满和寄情山林的避世之志。这位老英雄一定在幻想这些长身直立的植物变成像自己一样一心报国的忠勇志士，而自己就可以指挥这些部众去实现“了却君王天下事”的梦想。但事实是词人此时再次被排挤在朝廷之外，“投老空山”正道出作者此时的处境：临老之时遭人陷害，落职闲居，只得于深山中种松植杉，消磨人生，不平之气跃然纸上。
借事抒情，起笔即照应词前小序中所说的“检校停云新种杉松”，借此抒发面对世间沧桑所生的感慨。感慨古今兴废，宫阙池馆都湮没于黄土，“夜阑酒空人散”，这是落寞孤寂之感的体现。“政尔堪叹”，叹的是自己年岁渐高，恐怕看不到手植之杉松森然成荫的一天，更是感叹古来繁华皆成荒芜，历来欢娱惟留空恨，使后人凄然伤怀而已。两层感叹，结合了古今物人，涵盖十分宽泛，作者这样的感叹，也为下片作了铺垫。下片承接上文，作者发誓归隐之后誓不再理会闲事。寄希望于“万事不关心眼”，欲以超然物外来摆脱落职闲置的愤懑难平和百无聊赖。“梦觉东窗”以后，又想起陶渊明《停云》之诗，使词人开始思念亲戚故旧，于是想援笔作书以报之。无奈天气突变，似不欲让其写信，却又似在催其作诗，不知何意。作者心态彷徨，思绪纷乱，实际上是因其不甘寂寞，报国之情不泯而造成的，如若当时词人正在战场上指挥千万抗金志士进行北伐恢复的大业，就不会生此闲愁了。
这首词虽云“戏作”，但格调低沉，风味特别。上片起韵一面顺承“检校停云新种杉松”之意，一面又叹老嗟衰。其下一叹自己年老，二叹古来兴废盛衰、世事无常。过片一韵，借用陶渊明停云诗，写自己的出世之情。下面点题，借风吹纸笔暗用杜甫诗意，嘲讽“天心莫测”。从中折射出被迫“伏枥”的烈士暮年的真实状态。

辛弃疾（1140－1207），南宋词人。原字坦夫，改字幼安，别号稼轩，汉族，历城（今山东济南）人。出生时，中原已为金兵所占。21岁参加抗金义军，不久归南宋。历任湖北、江西、湖南、福建、浙东安抚使等职。一生力主抗金。曾上《美芹十论》与《九议》，条陈战守之策。其词抒写力图恢复国家统一的爱国热情，倾诉壮志难酬的悲愤，对当时执政者的屈辱求和颇多谴责；也有不少吟咏祖国河山的作品。题材广阔又善化用前人典故入词，风格沉雄豪迈又不乏细腻柔媚之处。由于辛弃疾的抗金主张与当政的主和派政见不合，后被弹劾落职，退隐江西带湖。
