楚公子围聘于郑，且娶于公孙段氏。伍举为介。将入馆，郑人恶之。使行人子羽与之言，乃馆于外。
译文： 楚国公子围到郑国聘问，同时迎娶公孙段家的女儿。伍举担任副使。他们正准备住进城内宾馆，郑国人怀疑他们有诈，派行人子羽同他们说了，于是住在城外的馆舍。
注释： 公子围:楚康王的弟弟,当时担任令尹楚国掌握军政大权的最高官员。公孙段氏：郑大夫，名子石。伍举：又称椒举，伍子胥的祖父。介：副使。恶：讨厌、憎恨。行人：官名。管朝觐聘问之事。类似于后世的外交官。
既聘，将以众逆。子产患之，使子羽辞曰：“以敝邑褊小，不足以容从者，请墠听命！”令尹使太宰伯州犁对曰：“君辱贶寡大夫围，谓围：‘将使丰氏抚有而室。’围布几筵，告于庄、共之庙而来。若野赐之，是委君贶于草莽也！是寡大夫不得列于诸卿也！不宁唯是，又使围蒙其先君，将不得为寡君老，其蔑以复矣。唯大夫图之！”子羽曰：“小国无罪，恃实其罪。将恃大国之安靖己，而无乃包藏祸心以图之。小国失恃而惩诸侯，使莫不憾者，距违君命，而有所壅塞不行是惧！不然，敝邑，馆人之属也，其敢爱丰氏之祧？”
译文： 聘问结束以后，公子围准备带领军队前去迎亲。子产担心这件事，派子羽推辞，说：“由于敝国地方狭小，容纳不下随从的人，请允许我们在城外修整祭祀的地面听候命令。”公子围派太宰伯州犁回答说：“辱蒙君王赏赐敝国大夫围，告诉围说‘将让丰氏作你的妻室’。围摆设了祭筵，在庄王、共王的宗庙视告后才来。如果在野外赐给围，这是将君王的赏赐抛在了草丛里，这就使敝国大夫围不能置身于卿大夫们的行列了。不仅是这样，更使围欺骗自己的先君，将不能再作敝国国君的大臣，恐怕也无法向敝国国君复命了。希望大夫考虑这件事。”子羽说：“小国没有罪，依赖大国才真正是它的罪过。本来打算依赖大国安定自己，又恐怕他们包藏祸心来图谋自己。敝国唯恐小国失去依赖，致使诸侯心怀戒备，使他们莫不怨恨大国，抗拒违背君王的命令，从而使大国的命令不能贯彻，无法施行。要不是这个原因，敝国是替贵国看守馆舍的，岂敢爱惜丰氏的宗庙而不让入内？”
注释： 逆：迎。墠：郊外祭祀的场地。令尹：指公子围。太宰：官名，掌管王家内外事务。伯州犁：楚人。贶：赠送，赐予。寡大夫：对于他国自称本国大夫的谦词。丰氏：即公孙段氏。公孙段食邑一丰，故称丰氏。而，通“尔”，你。“抚有而室”，就是做妻室。“将使丰氏抚有尔室”是引郑君的话。布：设置。几筵：古时的一种祭席。庄、共：楚庄王、共王。庄王是公子围的祖父，共王是他的父亲。若野赐之：意谓在城外成婚礼。蒙：欺。先君，指庄王、共王。老：大臣。恃：指依靠大国而自己无防备。靖：安定。而：同“尔”，你。包藏祸心：外表和好，心怀恶意。惩：警戒。距：同“拒”。壅塞：阻塞不通。馆人：管理客馆、招待宾客的人。祧：远祖的庙。
伍举知其有备也，请垂櫜而入。许之。
译文： 伍举知道郑国有了防备，就请求让军队垂下箭囊入城。郑国同意了。
注释： 櫜：盛弓箭的袋子。垂櫜：表示袋子里没有装弓箭之类的武器。

丘明（姓姜，氏丘，名明），华夏人，生于前502年，死于前422年，享年80岁。丘穆公吕印的后代。本名丘明，因其先祖曾任楚国的左史官，故在姓前添“左”字，故称左史官丘明先生，世称“左丘明”，后为鲁国太史 。左氏世为鲁国太史，至丘明则约与孔子（前551-479）同时，而年辈稍晚。他是当时著名史家、学者与思想家，著有《春秋左氏传》、《国语》等。他左丘明的最重要贡献在于其所著《春秋左氏传》与《国语》二书。左氏家族世为太史，左丘明又与孔子一起“如周，观书于周史”，故熟悉诸国史事，并深刻理解孔子思想。
