备受关注的2008北京奥运会主题口号，在6月26日晚举行的“第三届北京奥运文化活动节”开幕式上正式公布，该口号将接替“新北京新奥运”成为2008北京奥运会新的识别符号，并同时成为第13届残奥会主题口号。
浓缩全球人类智慧21万条打下基础
2005年1月1日，新年的第一天，北京奥组委在官方网站上以中、英、法三种文字正式向全世界发出征集2008年北京奥运会主题口号的邀请。
一石激起千层浪。北京奥组委用于接收应征表格的工作电脑竟然两次因太多蜂拥而来的电子邮件造成死机。
北京市海淀区刚满两周岁的冯璟鹏小朋友是这次活动最小的参与者，其父母将他的应征作品直接送到了北京奥组委。征集活动也吸引了不少耄耄老人参与，其中，70岁以上的参与者有1000多名。家住北京市东城区的86岁老人关润延是一位残疾人，她左眼已经失明，右眼视力仅有002，在老伴的协助下研究了大量的相关资料，反复推敲后，请人代笔的方式向奥组委提交了应征口号——“发扬奥林匹克精神”，并写下了长达500余字的创意说明。
山东省安丘市赵戈镇东邰村的张子善一个人就提出了170条口号。北京联合大学2000级金融系25名同学共提交了38条口号。他们认为，在毕业前夕，用口号描述自己心目中的北京奥运会，为母校留下了最好的毕业纪念。
国际奥委会文化和奥林匹克教育委员会主席、北京奥组委执委何振梁，国际奥委会形象与景观专家布莱德·克普兰德，北京外国语大学教授、英语教学专家陈琳等著名专家、学者都纷纷寄来了自己精心创作的应征口号。
至1月31日应征截止日时，北京2008年奥运会口号征集办公室共收到应征信件20161封，其中电子邮件10123封，邮寄信件10038封，应征口号总数达21万条。应征信件范围涵盖中国所有省、市、自治区、香港、澳门特别行政区、台湾地区及美国、英国、法国、日本、韩国、古巴、挪威、巴西等国家。应征口号除大量使用中文、英文外，还有不少使用了法语、西班牙语、葡萄牙语等语种。
在众多应征口号中，有的口号表达了广大人民对奥运来到中国的欢喜之情，有的口号表达了人们对北京奥运会的殷切期盼与憧憬，有的口号则描述了奥林匹克精神和东方文化相互融合的美好图景，其中不乏构思新颖、语句优美的优秀作品。北京2008年奥运会口号征集活动在全社会营造浓厚奥运氛围的同时，也成为一次面向社会公众进行的关于北京2008年奥运会口号创意的观点调查活动，广大参与者通过征集活动提出了各种意见及建议，这些意见及建议既为北京2008年奥运会口号研究工作打下了坚实基础。
头脑风暴 英文口号率先诞生
21万条鲜活的素材，需要深加工。北京奥组委会开始向社会各界人士征求意见，集思广益。学者、体育专家、外籍顾问、艺术名人、新闻工作者和国际知名公交公司都不遗余力地出谋划策。其中艰辛仅从一份长达109页的“口号会议纪要”就可见一斑。
“要做到‘言有尽，意无穷’不是件简单的事，研究过程中各方专家可谓殚精竭虑，被‘榨干’了精力。”北京大学中文系教授张颐武如是说。
三家知名的国际公关公司主动帮助北京奥组委在全球范围内进行专项调查。结果显示，对于“北京奥运会的口号应倡导什么”，28%的人表示应该是希望和未来，26%的人表示应体现合作、多元化、分享、和平、团结。对于“北京奥运会口号的关键词”，35%的人表示希望是“Joy(欢乐)”，22%的人钟情“Dream(梦想)”一词。对“北京奥运会口号应该先有英文还是先有中文”的提问，54%的人认为一定先要有英文。那么，“北京奥运会口号成功的关键的要素是什么”呢？被访者一致认为，口号必须简单得不能再简单，要非常容易理解，适合世界范围不同的受众。这些调查结果使北京奥组委明确地了解到了世界的呼声，筛选口号的标准也进一步清晰和具体化。
北京奥组委在口号征集工作结束后决定：首先，为了便于更多国家人民的理解，北京奥运会口号必须首先从英文创作着手；其次，口号的用词必须通俗易懂。
春节前，有关专家和工作人员，从21万条口号中筛选出800条口号。最后“和为贵”、“四海一家”、“同一世界共创未来”、“传承文明、和谐共赢”从百余条备选口号中脱颖而出。
围绕北京奥运会“人文奥运”的核心价值，以及“追求和谐发展、走向现代化的中国，将与世界共同创造更加美好未来”的形象目标，评选委员会进一步将参选口号中出现频率最多的核心词语逐一论证：
“四海一家，共创未来”和“传承文明，共享奥运会”四四对仗句式，整体有气势，但“未来”缺乏力量，给人遥远而不确定之感。“分享”，表现了一种无私的动机和富有感情色彩的承诺，但已被悉尼奥运会用过。“奥运”一词有感召力，但国际奥委会对在口号中直接使用实行严格限制。
“和谐”，一个非常亚洲的概念，比如中国哲学提到的阴与阳，有力表现了团结的主题，但缺点是英文harmony力量较弱，无法与其在中国文化中的崇高地位比拟，尤其是这个单词曾经用于1988年汉城奥运会口号。
“和为贵”与“四海之内皆兄弟”直接取材于中国古代典籍，人们耳熟能详，富有浓烈的中国文化特色和东方哲学意义，但英文无法彻底达意，由于文化差异显得极为平凡……似乎没有哪一句口号能使人眼前一亮，得到一致通过。
国际奥委会文化和奥林匹克教育委员会主席、北京奥组委执委何振梁，著名国际奥林匹克专家乔治·赫斯勒，国际奥委会品牌形象顾问卡伦等专家提出了一个观点，即北京奥运会口号不易使用突出东、西方文化差异的概念，采用“One World(一个世界)”这样简单而有力的词语，来强调在当前的国际环境中世界的一体性，强调中国与世界的融合更为恰当。这个观点很快得到了所有参与口号再创作的中外专家的一致认可。
接着，各国语言学专家们又反复比较“梦想(Dream)”与“未来(Future)”的差异。他们认为梦想和未来都是与奥林匹克有着强烈关联的概念，在任何社会文化背景下，“梦想(Dream)”都是一个令人动情的词汇，因为它们体现了对于“希望”的美好和乐观态度。“未来”在英文中是一个含有不确定因素的中性词：可能美好，可能黯淡。而“梦想”比“未来”更有力量，而且可以直接形成个人的心理与情感关联，是一个极富激情、人性化和感情色彩的词语。并且，尽管每个个体的人都有自己的梦想，但全人类最美好的理想是共同的，将这些最美好理想进行高度概括和抽象就是——“One dream”。这样，北京奥运会的英文口号——“One world One dream”终于在中外专家的赞许声中浮出水面！
怎样将这句英文口号翻译成能够同样受到中国人民喜爱、传神表达英文口号所包含的一切信息的中文口号，众多古汉语专家、语言学家、文化界名人等各界人士为此煞费苦心，绞尽脑汁。有的专家查遍《论语》、《四书》、《五经》、《孟子》等中国古籍经典，将英文口号翻译成充满汉语优雅、迷人魅力的文言文；有的专家从语言的平仄押韵考虑将英文口号翻译成中国人熟悉的“四四句”，还有的专家将英文口号翻译成时尚动感的语句。对于各方提出的数十个翻译方案，数不清经过了多少次讨论、修改、再讨论、再修改。最后，专家们的意见逐渐统一到用最朴素的中文表达英文口号的观点上来，最终确定了“同一个世界 同一个梦想”的中文口号方案。
2005年6月9日，北京奥组委第54次执委会全票通过了北京奥运会口号方案。很快，这一方案也得到了国际奥委会的批准。至此，北京奥运会的中英文口号——“同一个世界 同一个梦想(One world One dream)”终于诞生了！
“它简洁、上口、易记，具体奥林匹克特色，在全球化的同时也极具中国特色。”看到刚刚诞生的口号，国际奥运会形象与景观设计艺术总监布雷德·科普兰德非常兴奋，“这一口号和北京奥运会会徽“中国印 舞动的北京”有一种相同的蕴意——北京邀请全世界共同参加这一和谐的庆典，为欢乐与和平、为实现人类对未来共同的梦想而起舞。”
解读奥运主题口号
：“同一个世界 同一个梦想”(One world One dream)，集中体现了奥林匹克精神的实质和普遍价值观——团结、友谊、进步、和谐、参与和梦想，表达了全世界在奥林匹克精神的感召下，追求人类美好未来的共同愿望。
“同一个世界 同一个梦想”(One world One dream)，深刻反映了北京奥运会的核心理念，体现了作为“绿色奥运、科技奥运、人文奥运”三大理念的核心和灵魂的人文奥运所蕴含的和谐的价值观。建设和谐社会、实现和谐发展是我们的梦想和追求。“天人合一”，“和为贵”是中国人民自古以来对人与自然，人与人和谐关系的理想与追求。我们相信，和平进步、和谐发展、和睦相处、合作共赢、和美生活是全世界的共同理想。
“同一个世界 同一个梦想”(One world One dream)，文简意深，既是中国的，也是世界的。口号表达了北京人民和中国人民与世界各国人民共有美好家园，同享文明成果，携手共创未来的崇高理想；表达了一个拥有五千年文明，正在大步走向现代化的伟大民族致力于和平发展，社会和谐，人民幸福的坚定信念；表达了13亿中国人民为建立一个和平而更美好的世界做出贡献的心声。
英文口号“One world One dream”句法结构具有鲜明特色。两个“One”形成优美的排比，“World”和“Dream”前后呼应，整句口号简洁、响亮，寓意深远，既易记上口，又便于传播。中文口号“同一个世界 同一个梦想”中将“One”用“同一”表达，使“全人类同属一个世界，全人类共同追求美好梦想”的主题更加突出。
历届奥运主题口号回顾
在1984年洛杉矶奥运会之前，为一届奥运会提出口号的做法并不普遍。在该届奥运会上，最终也没有形成一句总的口号。参与历史(Play part in History)应该是组委会提出的很多口号中最具代表性的一个。
1988年汉城奥运会的理念是“和谐、进步(Harmony and Progress)”。这个理念最终成为汉城奥运会的口号。
当国际政治中的阴云和奥运赛场上的敌视一同消散时，1992年西班牙巴塞罗那奥运会响亮地喊出了“永远的朋友(Friends for life)”这一口号，它不仅强调了奥林匹克精神中友谊与和平的永恒主题。
“分享奥林匹克精神(Share the spirit)”这一口号是由悉尼在1992年提出的。当时，悉尼正在申办第27届奥运会，这句口号一直被沿用到2000年悉尼奥运会落幕。
长野奥组委执委会于1992年11月26日批准了长野冬奥会的举办理念，即“源自内心的奥运——与爱同在(Games from the Heart-Together with Love)”。围绕这一举办理念，最终确定了主题口号(From around the world to flower as one)”
1995年，美国盐湖城获得了第19届冬季奥运会的主办权，但盐湖城随即陷入了申办丑闻之中。经过调整，新的盐湖城奥组委认为，盐湖城冬奥会迫切需要重新树立和端正自己的公共形象。“点燃心中之火(Light the fire within)”的口号便是在这种背景下走上了舞台，“圣火”是正义与纯洁的象征，而燃烧在内心的“圣火”当然也就暗喻了本届冬奥会正义的内在心灵。2002年冬奥会开幕之际，又恰逢“9·11”事件余波未平，“圣火”所寓意的激情和希望也起到了振奋美国人精神的效用，这时候“心中的圣火”又自然被理解为了“心中的希望”。“点燃心中之火”成为近年来奥运会口号中的经典之作。
1996年亚特兰大奥运会作为20世纪最后一届奥运会，将口号定为“百年奥运，世纪庆典”(The celebration of the century)。
第28届奥运会上，希腊人热情而自豪地喊出了“欢迎回家(Welcome Home)”的口号。其中不仅包含了雅典奥运会对全球奥林匹克大家庭所有成员最诚挚、最热烈的欢迎盛情，更充分表达了希腊作为奥林匹克发祥地对奥运会重归故里的喜悦和自豪之情。
即将举办的2006年都灵冬奥会上，“永不熄灭的火焰”(An ever Burning Flame)将伴随着一系列精彩赛事带给世人一个又一个惊喜与奇迹。
