Jim was never late Della doubled the fob chain in her hand and sat on the corner of the table near the door that he always entered Then she heard his step on the stair away down on the first flight, and she turned white for just a moment She had a habit for saying little silent prayer about the simplest everyday things, and now she whispered: "Please God, make him think I am still pretty"
The door opened and Jim stepped in and closed it He looked thin and very serious Poor fellow, he was only twenty-two--and to be burdened with a family! He needed a new overcoat and he was without gloves
Jim stopped inside the door, as immovable as a setter at the scent of quail His eyes were fixed upon Della, and there was an expression in them that she could not read, and it terrified her It was not anger, nor surprise, nor disapproval, nor horror, nor any of the sentiments that she had been prepared for He simply stared at her fixedly with that peculiar expression on his face
Della wriggled off the table and went for him
"Jim, darling," she cried, "don't look at me that way I had my hair cut off and sold because I couldn't have lived through Christmas without giving you a present It'll grow out again--you won't mind, will you I just had to do it My hair grows awfully fast Say `Merry Christmas!' Jim, and let's be happy You don't know what a nice-- what a beautiful, nice gift I've got for you"

在西方的占星术和12星座理论里面，都是用阳历来推断“性格”，未来的“运气”，“婚姻”，“情绪变化”等。虽然他们都带有迷信的色彩，但是却有十分悠久的历史。
◇ 生日日期在中国
几千年来，中国人的生日记录方法跟西方简直是大相径庭。中国人新的一岁开始于农历新年的大年初一，就是说除夕过后，每个人就长了一岁。所以新年辞旧迎新的意味里面还有岁数的一定含义。而一般过生日还是习惯使用农历。所以每个人可以有两个生日，一个农历一个公历。因为中国农历纪年法是一种经过修订的月历，是跟月亮的公转周期有关的，所以每一年农历生日对应的公历日期不一样。
第一个生日是周岁，几乎是最重要的生日。
旧时老人过生日分得比较仔细。如果是大家族中德高望重的家长过生日还会有相应的庆祝活动。传统生日一般是按虚岁计算。
→整生日：指的是每逢个位数是9或者0的生日 例如 59岁，60岁，49岁，50岁等。他们有不同的叫法：
大庆 每逢生日个位9的生日如39 49 59 69 79等；
正庆 每逢生日个位0的生日如40 50 60 70 80等。
→散生日：生日个位数是1-8的生日 如51-58岁。
◎ 生日的庆祝方式 ◎
每个人的生日都是对个人来说比较重要的日子。它代表着年龄的增长和阅历的增加。中国旧时的生日庆祝一般是面对特别小的孩子或者年龄超过40岁以上人。
孔子说：“三十而立，四十不惑，五十耳顺，六十知天命，七十古稀”。这些岁数对于中国来说应该具有特别的含义。人到了80岁以后就是高寿了，所以这个岁数去世的人的葬礼也叫喜丧。
◇ 中国旧时传统
庆祝老人的大庆和正庆；
小朋友过生日，父母多数会为其做只红鸡蛋，以作表示。
◇ 西方生日传统
在多数英语国家，人们在生日聚会上唱《祝你生日快乐》歌，祝福过生日的人。一般是在生日Party上有人捧出点燃生日蜡烛的生日蛋糕时大家齐声歌唱（一般要关灯，保持房间黑暗）。生日蛋糕一般是一种装饰的非常漂亮的蛋糕，而且在端上来的时候上面要插上与寿星年龄一样多的 蜡烛。 寿星要默默的许个愿望，然后吹灭蜡烛，这是因为古时欧洲人相信烟是能升上天堂的，许愿后吹灭蜡烛，就代表愿望能随著烟传达到天空。而如果是一口气就吹灭了所有的蜡烛，那么愿望就可能实现。有种迷信说法认为如果把愿望说出来就不灵了。寿星一般要切蛋糕的第一刀，除非是太小父母才可以代劳。
如果生日聚会在一家餐馆举行，那么也会唱生日歌。餐厅的服务生可能还会领唱接着就会送上餐后甜点(可能是也可能不是蛋糕，可能免费也可能不免费)。 这个餐后甜点可能用一些发光的东西代替蜡烛。餐厅的其他顾客一般会加入进来一起祝福，唱歌。 在一些餐厅还会有特别的非传统生日歌去和舞蹈表演。
对于一些特别的生日或者因为蜡烛的数目会有引起火灾的风险，特殊的蜡烛可能会取代实际的多个小蜡烛。这些蜡烛做成数字的样子，例如5随生日可能在蛋糕上点一支象数字5的蜡烛，50岁生日点一支象数字50的蜡烛就行了。
生日对每个人来说都是很重特别的日子，所以一般过生日的人都会受到朋友和家人的特别待遇。所以小孩子都对自己的生日十分的期待，甚至希望早点来，但是成年人则比较反感，因为又有人来祝贺自己老了一岁。 除了聚会之外，在生日这一点还会有礼物送给过生日的人，一般来说会得到一大堆朋友和家人送的礼物。
孩子们的生日聚会一般比较有趣，还有许多有意思的游戏例如老鹰抓小鸡Pin the Tail on the Donkey, 抢座位游戏， hitting piñatas等。成年人的生日聚会就比较正式了，一般是在一家餐厅吃一顿丰盛的晚餐。不管在什么年龄，这些聚会的目的都是让过生日的人感到非常的幸福快乐。有个笑话这样讲，生日有时被叫做一年内最美好的一天，生日后一天则是一年最糟糕的一天，因为到下一次生日还有一年呢！
还有一个传统叫惊喜聚会。有时人们故意显得把某个人的生日忘记了，让要过生日的人感到自己被忽视了，而实际上大家都在暗中准备惊喜聚会。相反的，很多人对这个聚会也是守口如瓶，因为大家对这个聚会都很期待。
