贝尔的探索正顺应了当时社会发展需要。贝尔和沃森特两人，一边研究电声转换原理，一边设计实用的机械。

在一次实验中，沃森特和贝尔分别在两个房间里做实验，他们在两个设备之间用电线相联着。沃森特的机器上的一个簧片被粘在磁铁上了，他漫不经心地拉开了簧片，就在此时，贝尔突然发现自己机器上的簧片在颤动，并且发出了声音。
